Pokémon the Movie: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages

Ash, Pikachu and their travelling companions arrive at a desert city by the sea, where they encounter Hoopa, a Mythical Pokémon able to pull people and Pokémon through magical rings. A frightening incident leads them to an old story about a hero who long ago put an end to a rampaging Pokémon, and the force that was contained back then now threatens to escape again.

The film is directed by Kunihiko Yuyama, the twenty-fifth of the twenty-eight films he directed in chronological order, following Pokémon: Pikachu, What's This Key? from 2014 and preceding Pokémon the Movie: Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel from 2016. Atsuhiro Tomioka wrote the screenplay, and the voice cast includes Rica Matsumoto as Satoshi, Ikue Otani as Pikachu, Mayuki Makiguchi as Serena, Yuki Kaji as Citron, Mariya Ise as Eureka and Megumi Satou as Dedenne. It runs seventy-three minutes.

Released in July 2015, the Japanese production took in roughly 22 million dollars worldwide, a modest figure for a series entry. On IMDb it holds 5.9 out of 10 from about 2,600 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.8 out of 10 from around 320 votes, so the smaller audience sample is clearly the more favourable of the two.
