Six months after preventing Japan's destruction, Akira Takizawa has disappeared, leaving only a message for his friend Saki Morimi pointing her toward where everything began. Saki travels to New York to find him, while the remaining Selecao continue their struggle over the future of Japan. Some want Takizawa eliminated, others might help him, and a new participant intends to kill him on camera. The film continues the story of a young man with self-induced amnesia, a cellphone holding a vast fortune, and a game run by the mysterious Mr. Outside.
The King of Eden is the first of two theatrical sequels to the Eden of the East television series and follows the 2007 film Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society in Kenji Kamiyama's directing career. Kamiyama wrote the screenplay and directed; the voice cast includes Ryohei Kimura as Takizawa, Saori Hayami as Saki, Sakiko Tamagawa as Juiz, Takuya Eguchi as Satoshi Osugi, Motoyuki Kawahara as Kazuomi Hirasawa, and Ayaka Saito as Mikuru "Micchon" Katsuhara. Production involved Fuji Television Network and Production I.G.
Released in Japan in late November 2009, the film runs 82 minutes and blends romantic comedy with thriller elements, with New York rendered as a realistic setting. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.8 out of 10 from around 80 votes, a modest score suggesting a mixed but not unfavorable response. The story was concluded the following year with the second film, Paradise Lost.
