After the Wedding
Short description
Jacob Pederson runs an orphanage in India and has devoted his life to the children there. When the home faces closure, a Danish businessman named Jørgen offers a large donation, on the condition that Jacob travel to Denmark to sign the papers. Jacob makes the trip, and his arrival coincides with the wedding of Jørgen's daughter Anna, to which Jørgen invites him. Among the guests Jacob finds Helene, Jørgen's wife and the woman he once loved before he left for India. What began as a straightforward transaction becomes something far more personal, forcing Jacob to weigh his commitments against a past he had put behind him. The film is a drama directed by Susanne Bier, from a screenplay by Anders Thomas Jensen, and it followed her 2004 film Brothers in her filmography.
Mads Mikkelsen plays Jacob, with Stine Fischer Christensen as Anna, Sidse Babett Knudsen as Helene, Rolf Lassgård as Jørgen, Christian Tafdrup as Christian and Ida Dwinger as Annette, among 26 credited cast members.
After the Wedding runs 124 minutes and was released in February 2006, produced in Denmark and Sweden. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 7.4 from 103 reviews, while on TMDB it has a rating of 7.1 from 496 votes, indicating that critics and audiences responded to the film in broadly similar terms.
What's left behind the scenes
- During a screening of the film in Estonia, two film reels were mixed up and played in the wrong order. The audience hardly noticed the mistake and embraced the film exactly as it was shown.
- When Jakob, played by Mads Mikkelsen, meets Sidse Babette Knudsen's character during the wedding, both of their hairstyles constantly change from shot to shot.
