Short description
Three ex-convicts are offered a job by a Mexican crime boss: abduct the child of a man who is trying to push the boss aside. Troy is the group's thinker, Mad Dog is volatile and unpredictable, and Diesel has ties to organized crime. The kidnapping goes wrong, and the three men end up hunted by both the underworld and the police. Having vowed never to return to prison, they are willing to do anything to stay free. The film is based on a novel by Edward Bunker.
Paul Schrader directed, working from a screenplay by Matthew Wilder. It is the seventeenth of the twenty-two films he has directed in chronological order, arriving between Dying of the Light and First Reformed. Nicolas Cage plays Troy, Willem Dafoe plays Mad Dog, and Christopher Matthew Cook plays Diesel, with Omar J. Dorsey, Louisa Krause and Melissa Bolona in supporting roles. The production involved companies based in the United Kingdom, China and the United States.

- Director Paul Schrader recounted that he offered the role of Greco to Michael Douglas, Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, Nick Nolte, Christopher Walken, Jeff Goldblum, and Rupert Everett, but they all declined the offer for one reason or another. Ultimately, Schrader himself played the character, appearing on screen for the first time.
- To persuade Willem Dafoe to star in the film, Nicolas Cage promised him his entire fee ($100,000) and kept his promise.
- Filming took 25 days. The crew consisted primarily of recent graduates of film schools.
