Bogus

After his mother, a circus performer, dies in a car accident, seven-year-old Albert leaves Las Vegas to live in a small eastern city with Harriet Franklin, a childhood friend of his mother. Harriet is a single, independent businesswoman with little idea of how to raise a grieving child, and the two struggle to get along. Albert takes refuge in Bogus, an imaginary friend only he can see: a warm, large-nosed French magician. Harriet is startled when she begins to perceive Bogus as well, and the question becomes whether he is real or a product of the boy's need.

Norman Jewison directed the film, the sixteenth of the nineteen features he made, between Only You and The Hurricane, from a screenplay by Alvin Sargent. Whoopi Goldberg plays Harriet, Gérard Depardieu plays Bogus, and Haley Joel Osment plays Albert, with Denis Mercier, Andrea Martin and Nancy Travis in supporting roles. The production, backed by Warner Bros. Pictures, Regency Enterprises and Yorktown Productions, carried a budget of 32 million dollars.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 5.4 from roughly 7,400 votes, and on TMDB 5.8 from 248 votes, while a critics' score of 4.9 from 16 reviews places it somewhat below the audience figures.
