Theodore Rex

Theodore Rex is set in a version of the near future where genetically recreated dinosaurs live alongside humans as intelligent, talking members of society. When dinosaurs begin turning up dead, detective Katie Coltrane is assigned the case and forced to work with Theodore, a Tyrannosaurus Rex who has joined the police force. Their investigation into the killings of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals leads them toward a scientist with plans that threaten the whole world. The film is a science fiction comedy aimed at family audiences, and it was directed and written by Jonathan R. Betuel.

It was Betuel's second film as director, following My Science Project in 1985, and it was produced by Richard Gilbert Abramson for New Line Cinema with J&M Entertainment and Shooting Star Entertainment. Whoopi Goldberg stars as Coltrane, with George Newbern providing the voice of Theodore. The cast also includes Armin Mueller-Stahl, Juliet Landau, Bud Cort and Stephen McHattie, among roughly forty credited performers.

Released in December 1995, the film had a budget of about 34 million US dollars. Its reception was poor: on IMDb it holds a rating of 2.4 out of 10 from around 5,100 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 3.6 out of 10 from about 123 votes. A critics' rating of 1.7 out of 10 from five reviews places it below even those audience scores.
