After his wife dies, Jake Barnes moves his two children from Chicago to a small Alaskan coastal town. A former airline pilot, he now flies a light plane on supply runs to remote settlements. His teenage son resents the move and clashes with his father, who spends little time at home. When Jake's aircraft goes down in the mountains during a storm, the authorities search without success, and his children decide to look for him themselves. Crossing lakes, rivers and glaciers, they free a polar bear cub from a poacher, and the animal accompanies them.

Fraser Clarke Heston directed the film, his third feature after Treasure Island and Needful Things. Andy Burg and Scott Myers wrote the screenplay, with Burg producing alongside Carol Fuchs. Thora Birch and Vincent Kartheiser play Jessie and Sean, and Dirk Benedict plays Jake; Don S. Davis appears as a sergeant. It was shot in Canada and the United States on a budget of 23 million dollars, and its worldwide gross of about 12 million dollars left it well short of that figure.

On IMDb the film holds 5.8 out of 10 from roughly 6,100 votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 5.8, from about 150 votes. A critics' rating of 5 out of 10 from 11 reviews places it close to those audience scores, indicating a broadly middling reception rather than a sharp division between reviewers and viewers.
