Short description
In January 2009, US Airways flight 1549 strikes a flock of birds shortly after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport, disabling both engines. With no thrust and limited options, Captain Chesley Sullenberger, known as Sully, sets the aircraft down on the freezing Hudson River. All 155 people on board survive, and he becomes a national hero overnight, celebrated by the public and the press alongside his first officer, Jeff Skiles.
The acclaim comes under pressure. Investigators looking into the incident examine whether the river landing was the right decision, raising the possibility of human error and putting Sullenberger's long career as a pilot at risk.
Clint Eastwood directs this drama, the thirty-fifth of the forty films he has directed in chronological order, following Jersey Boys and preceding The Mule. Todd Komarnicki wrote the screenplay, and Eastwood produced with Frank Marshall and Tim Moore. Tom Hanks plays Sullenberger and Aaron Eckhart plays Skiles, with Anna Gunn, Holt McCallany, Mike O'Malley and Jamey Sheridan in supporting roles.
Released in September 2016, the film cost around 60 million dollars and grossed roughly 241 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 7.4 rating from about 321,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.2 from around 7,900 votes. A critics' rating of 7.2 from 346 reviews places professional assessments close to audience opinion.
What's left behind the scenes
- Real pilots were involved in the simulator scenes.
- At the 55th minute of the film, when Sully checks the tail of the plane for any remaining passengers, he wades waist-deep into the water, getting his trousers and shirt wet. When Sully enters the cockpit in the next shot, his clothes are already dry.
- During the preparation for filming, Tom Hanks spent half a day talking with Chesley Sullenberger. He later admitted that he was surprised by how accurately Hanks portrayed him on screen.
- The biplane flown by young Sully is a very rare Stearman Cloudboy model. At the time the film was made, only 6 such aircraft remained in working condition.
- During filming, which took place shortly after the plane crash, the filmmakers first captured the vast empty space on the surface of the Hudson River, surrounded by rescue boats. They then combined these shots with footage of an old A320 aircraft on an artificial lake at Universal Studios in California.
- After the emergency landing, the Airbus A320 aircraft was retrieved from the Hudson River and transferred to the aviation museum located in Charlotte, the largest city in the state of North Carolina. According to the plot, the emergency flight was headed to Charlotte. During the credits, real passengers and the crew of US-Airways-1549 were shown on the screen.
- At the seventh minute, during a taxi ride, a fourth-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee in the WK2 body style is visible, which began production in May 2010, however, the events of the film take place in January 2009.
- When Tom Hanks’ character goes for a run through nighttime New York, a poster for the film “Gran Torino,” also directed by Clint Eastwood, can be spotted on one of the buildings.
- Many years ago, Clint Eastwood himself survived an emergency plane landing on water, hence his genuine interest in this particular story.
- The film is based on the autobiography "Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters" by Chesley Sullenberger and Jeffrey Zaslow.
- The captain of the first ferry to reach the plane was Vincent Lombardi. He appeared on screen as himself.
- The film's director and producer, Clint Eastwood, deliberately filmed scenes of people boarding the life raft without prior rehearsals. He wanted to show how difficult it actually is. The actions of Tom Hanks (who played the main character) and Aaron Eckhart (who played the second pilot Jeff) were not detailed in the script.
