The Innocents

The Innocents is set in Poland in the winter of 1945, where French Red Cross doctor Mathilde Beaulieu is working to treat French survivors of the war before their repatriation. A Polish nun arrives at the hospital begging for help, and Mathilde follows her to a convent outside Warsaw, where she finds that a number of the sisters are pregnant after Soviet soldiers attacked the community months earlier. The Mother Superior is determined to keep the situation hidden, and Mathilde's arrival is met with suspicion. As she helps the nuns through their pregnancies, she forms a bond with Sister Maria, and the two gradually uncover the truth concealed behind the convent walls.

Anne Fontaine directed the film, which sits between Gemma Bovery and White as Snow in her filmography, from a screenplay by Alice Vial and Sabrina B. Karine. Lou de Laâge plays Mathilde, with Agata Buzek as Sister Maria, Agata Kulesza as the Mother Superior, Vincent Macaigne as Samuel, Joanna Kulig as Sister Irena and Eliza Rycembel as Teresa. The production involved 56 credited cast members and 48 credited crew members.

Released in 2016, the film is a Belgian, Polish and French co-production. It earned a worldwide box office of about 1 million USD.
