Into the Storm

Into the Storm follows Winston Churchill through the Second World War, from his appointment as prime minister in 1940 to the months after victory in Europe in 1945. As he leads Britain through the conflict, the pressure of the office takes a toll on his marriage to Clementine. When the fighting ends, the country holds its first general election in years, and Churchill waits out the vote count during a holiday in France with his wife and daughter, reflecting on the war years and the strain they placed on their relationship. The film is a sequel to the earlier television production The Gathering Storm.

Thaddeus O'Sullivan directed, working from a screenplay by Hugh Whitemore, with Frank Doelger, Julie Payne and Tracey Scoffield producing for Scott Free Productions, HBO Films and the BBC. Brendan Gleeson plays Churchill opposite Janet McTeer as Clementine, with Iain Glen, James D'Arcy, Adrian Scarborough and Robert Pugh in supporting roles. The film runs 100 minutes and sits between O'Sullivan's Ordinary Decent Criminal and The Miracle Club in his filmography.

On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from around 6,400 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.4 out of 10 from a much smaller base of about 90 votes. The wider engagement on IMDb and the higher score there suggest a television audience that responded more warmly to the film than the narrower group voting on TMDB.
