Howard Wakefield is a successful lawyer with a wife, two daughters and a comfortable home in the New York suburbs. After a breakdown, he does not leave his family in any ordinary sense: he hides in the attic of a garage on his own property, watches his wife Diana and the children from a distance, and lets them believe he has disappeared. Neither his household nor his office knows where he has gone, and what begins as a pause from his life stretches into months, until returning to the way things were becomes a question of whether it is still possible.
Robin Swicord directed and wrote the screenplay, her second feature after The Jane Austen Book Club in 2007. Bryan Cranston plays Howard, with Jennifer Garner as Diana, and Jason O'Mara, Beverly D'Angelo, Ian Anthony Dale and Pippa Bennett-Warner among the supporting cast. The film is a drama running 106 minutes, produced by Mockingbird Pictures and Dominion Pictures.
On IMDb, the film holds a 6.3 rating from around 19,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.1 from roughly 459 votes. A critics' rating of 6.6 from 66 reviews places it slightly above both audience scores, indicating a modest but comparable reception across critics and viewers.
