Mafia: Survival Game
Short description
Set in a distant future in Moscow, this science fiction action film follows a lethal television game show based on the game Mafia. A group of contestants must identify and eliminate hidden enemies to win a significant cash prize. Those who are voted out of the competition are forced to encounter their deepest fears within a computer simulation, and only the winner survives the ordeal.
The movie was directed by Sarik Andreasyan, following his 2014 film American Heist. The cast includes Viktor Verzhbitskiy, Venyamin Smekhov, Vyacheslav Razbegaev, Olga Tumaykina, Andrey Chadov, and Yury Chursin. The screenplay was written by Andrey Gavrilov, and the production was handled by Cinema Fund, Renovatio Entertainment, and Enjoy Movies.
Produced with a budget of 3 million USD, the film earned 4 million USD at the worldwide box office. Audience reception was generally low, as reflected by a 4.2/10 rating on IMDb from 3,500 votes and a 4.5/10 rating on TMDB from 111 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- To maximize the intrigue of the Mafia game, several versions of the ending were filmed during production, so that even the actors didn't know who was Mafia and who was a civilian until the film's premiere. The final edit of the film was kept strictly confidential until its release.
- Before the start of filming, the film's director, Sarik Andreasyan, organized a series of "demonstration games" of classic "Mafia" with the performers of all the key roles in the film. This was a mandatory condition for an actor's approval for a role.
- The rights to adapt the game were officially purchased from the creator of the psychological game "Mafia," Dmitry Davydov, who currently resides in the USA. Davydov invented "Mafia" in 1986 while still a student at the psychology faculty of Moscow State University.
- One of the film's scenes was shot at the ZIL plant, and this was the last time the location was used for filmmaking.
- During the expedition to Tenerife Island, a local production company, previously involved in the production of "Fast & Furious 6" (2013), worked with the Russian crew.
- For the role of one of the "Mafia" participants – a seriously ill engineer named Ilya – actor Andrey Chadov specifically lost 8 kg, and a nutritionist developed a diet plan for him. Andrey also took up boxing and swimming.
- During filming in the open ocean, the second unit director Alexei Smolyar broke a rib while assisting the underwater cameraman.
- For the role of the outstanding dancer Maria, actress Natalia Rudova took ballet lessons from ballet teacher and choreographer Yulia Chicheva, a ballerina from the Bolshoi Theatre.
