The Salesman
Short description
Emad and Rana are a married couple living in central Tehran. When structural damage makes their building unsafe, they move into another apartment, one previously occupied by a woman whose reputation the couple only gradually comes to understand. Emad teaches at a school and Rana runs the household; in the evenings they rehearse a theatre production of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman, in which they play the leads. An incident involving a visitor to the old address, and the previous tenant's belongings, unsettles the marriage and pushes Emad to investigate on his own, while Rana refuses to involve the police. What follows tests the trust between them.
Asghar Farhadi wrote and directed the film, which sits between The Past and Everybody Knows in his filmography. Shahab Hosseini and Taraneh Alidoosti play Emad and Rana, with Babak Karimi, Mina Sadati, Mehdi Koushki and Farid Sajjadi Hosseini in supporting roles. The film was produced by Alexandre Mallet-Guy and Farhadi, and was made by companies in Iran, Qatar and France.
Released in 2016, The Salesman grossed around 7 million dollars worldwide. It holds a critics' rating of 7.9 out of 10 from 196 reviews, higher than its audience scores of 7.7 on IMDb from 69,000 votes and 7.2 on TMDB from 954 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- At the very beginning of filming, director Asghar Farhadi posted an announcement on social media seeking actors. Those interested were asked to send the director short videos about themselves. Thousands of Iranians, dreaming of appearing in a film, responded to the announcement.
- Filming was temporarily suspended due to the sudden death of sound producer Ayatollah Najafi.
- Asghar Farhadi liked the idea of the film so much that he interrupted filming a movie with Penélope Cruz in Spain and returned to Iran to shoot "The Salesman."
- In Persian, the film is called Foreshande, or "The Salesman." In 2016, work was underway on a French drama with the same title, so Farhadi's film was released in French theaters under the title Le Client, meaning “The Client.”
