Short description

The Void is a Canadian horror, mystery and science fiction film about a police officer, Daniel Carter, whose routine night patrol takes a turn when he finds a bloodied man stumbling along an empty road. He drives him to a small rural hospital with only a handful of staff on duty, and stays to question him once he recovers. Before long, hooded figures gather outside the building and cut off any way out, while patients and personnel inside begin turning into something no longer human. Carter and a few survivors are left to work out what is happening and to descend into the hospital's lower levels in an attempt to stop it.

The film was directed by Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski, who also wrote the screenplay. It is Gillespie's second feature, following Father's Day (2011), and the third for Kostanski, after Manborg and Father's Day, both from 2011. Aaron Poole plays Carter, with Kathleen Munroe, Art Hindle, Daniel Fathers, Kenneth Welsh and Ellen Wong in supporting roles. Casey Walker and Jonathan Bronfman produced.

Released in 2016 and running 90 minutes, the film drew a mixed but not dismissive response. On IMDb it holds 5.9/10 from around 47,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6/10 from roughly 1,500 votes. A critics' rating of 6.1/10 from 77 reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting a similar, moderate level of appreciation across both groups.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The role of the hospital was played by the former high school building in Sault Ste. Marie, in the Canadian province of Ontario. The building was demolished shortly after filming wrapped.
  • At the beginning of the film, one of the patients is watching the classic horror film "Night of the Living Dead" (George Romero, 1968).
  • The filming was funded through crowdfunding.
