A Violent Prosecutor centres on Byun Jae-wook, a prosecutor whose aggressive methods include roughing up suspects until they confess. When a man he questioned is found dead, Jae-wook is convicted of murder and sentenced to prison. Convinced he was set up, he sets out from behind bars to find whoever was really responsible. Inside, he encounters the con artist Han Chi-won, and the two work together on a scheme to expose those who framed him and settle the score.
The film was released in February 2016 and runs 126 minutes. It is a Korean production from Moonlight Film and Sanai Pictures, directed and written by Lee Il-hyung, and it was the first film he directed, later followed by Remember in 2022. Hwang Jung-min plays Jae-wook and Gang Dong-won plays Chi-won; Lee Sung-min, Park Sung-woong, Kim Eung-soo and Park Jong-hwan are also in the cast, which numbers 48 credited performers. Producers were Yoon Jong-bin, Kuk Su-ran and Han Jae-duk.
Audience response has been moderate. On IMDb it holds 6.7 out of 10 from around 3,800 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7 out of 10 from roughly 123 votes, a small sample that makes that average less settled than the larger one. Blending action, comedy and crime, the film pairs its prison-set revenge planning with the clash between a disgraced lawman and a career swindler.
