John Wayne Cleaver is a teenager in a small Midwestern town who lives with his divorced mother, a mortician, and his older sister, and who sometimes helps out at the family funeral home. John is preoccupied with violent thoughts and is convinced he could become a killer himself, so he imposes strict rules on his behaviour and sees a therapist, Dr. Neblin, every week. When a series of murders strikes the town, John sets out to identify the person responsible, an effort that draws him toward a neighbour whose behaviour seems odd and, at the same time, closer to the impulses he fears in himself.
The film was directed by Billy O'Brien, who wrote the screenplay with Christopher Hyde, and it followed O'Brien's earlier feature Scintilla. Max Records plays John, with Christopher Lloyd as Mr. Crowley, Laura Fraser as John's mother April, Christina Baldwin as Aunt Margaret, Karl Geary as Dr. Neblin and Dee Noah as Kay Crowley. It was made for about 1 million USD as a co-production between the United Kingdom, Ireland and the United States.
On IMDb, the film holds a critics' rating of 6.8/10 from 57 reviews, while on TMDB it has a rating of 6.3/10 from 548 votes. The two scores are close, suggesting a broadly similar response from reviewers and general viewers, with the audience rating resting on a much larger number of votes.
