Elizabeth "Liz" Gilbert has a husband, a home in New York and a successful career, yet she comes to feel that this life is not the one she wants. After a painful divorce, she sets out on a journey across several countries, spending time in Italy, India and Bali as she tries to work out what she actually wants and who she is. The film is based on Elizabeth Gilbert's autobiographical bestseller of the same name, and its story moves between the pleasures of food, spiritual practice and the possibility of a new love.
Ryan Murphy directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Jennifer Salt, with Dede Gardner producing. It was Murphy's second feature as director, following Running with Scissors in 2006 and preceding The Normal Heart in 2014 and The Prom in 2020. Julia Roberts plays Liz, and the cast includes Javier Bardem as Felipe, James Franco as David, Billy Crudup as Steven and Viola Davis as Delia Shiraz, alongside I. Gusti Ayu Puspawati as Nyomo.
Released in August 2010, the film runs 133 minutes. Against a budget of 60 million dollars, it took about 205 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its cost. On IMDb it holds 5.9 out of 10 from roughly 113,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.2 out of 10 from about 2,700 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 5.2 out of 10 from just over 200 reviews.
