Short description
Wade Wilson, the wisecracking mercenary known as Deadpool, is back, and this time he is not working alone. After a personal loss leaves him questioning whether his life still has meaning, he is drawn into the affairs of a troubled teenage mutant named Russell. A soldier from the future called Cable arrives with the intention of killing the boy, and Deadpool decides to stop him. Since the rules of the X-Men do not suit him, he assembles his own team, the X-Force, to take on the threat. The film continues the story begun in Deadpool (2016) and mixes action and comedy with the title character's running commentary.
David Leitch directed, following John Wick (2014), the short Deadpool: No Good Deed (2017) and Atomic Blonde (2017). Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick and star Ryan Reynolds wrote the screenplay, and Reynolds produced alongside Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg. Ryan Reynolds plays Wade Wilson, with Josh Brolin as Cable, Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Julian Dennison as Russell, Zazie Beetz as Domino and T.J. Miller as Weasel.
Made for about 110 million dollars, the film took roughly 735 million dollars worldwide, a strong return. On IMDb it holds 7.6/10 from around 740,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.5/10 from far fewer votes. Its critics' rating of 7.1/10 from 417 reviews is close to those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Tim Miller, the director of the film "Deadpool" (2016), refused to film the sequel due to creative differences with Ryan Reynolds. Following Tim Miller, Junkie XL, a Dutch musician and composer who wrote the music for the first part, also left the project.
- Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Lizzy Caplan, Kerry Washington, Sienna Miller, Ruby Rose, Mackenzie Davis, Kelly Rohrbach, Eve Hewson, Sofia Boutella, Stephanie Sigman, Sylvia Hoeks, and Janelle Monáe all auditioned for the role of Domino. After much deliberation, the filmmakers chose Zazie Beetz.
- Rob Liefeld, the original comic book author, wanted Russell Crowe to play Cable.
- Stuntwoman Joy Harris, a double for Zazie Beetz, died during filming.
- The character Domino has vitiligo: a condition characterized by the loss of melanin in patches of skin.
- "The Longest Death Scene" was originally even longer.
- Lynch wanted the super-power dampeners to constantly malfunction during the mutant prison riot. The director wanted to showcase the various mutant powers, but ultimately had to abandon the idea due to its cost.
- At the beginning of the film, Deadpool is about to attack Chinese bandits and observes them from a neighboring rooftop. Behind him, a sign is visible with the words "pool of dead" written in Chinese – effectively the main character's name.
- The studio executives were considering David Leitch, Rupert Sanders, Drew Goddard, and Magnus Martens as directors for the sequel.
- The scene where Deadpool escapes from a crowd of angry bandits is inspired by a similar scene from the beginning of "Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark". There, Harrison Ford's hero ran away from natives, urging the pilot to start the plane.
- Peter's Twitter account was mostly managed by Reynolds himself.
- Matt Damon makes a small cameo appearance in the film. Reynolds met him at a party where he told him about the monologue with toilet paper. Damon liked the scene so much that he immediately agreed to participate in the filming.
- The Celine Dion song in the credits appeared thanks to director David Lynch. He was trying to figure out how to create a pause between Vanessa’s (Morena Baccarin) death and the start of the main storyline.
- When Deadpool dies, the creators add fragments of music from the finale of "Logan," from the scene with Wolverine's death, to the soundtrack.
- The cats depicted on Deadpool’s t-shirt belong to Taylor Swift.
- Litch specifically filmed fake scenes with members of "Task Force X" to insert them into the trailer.
- The X-Men cameos were filmed on the set of "Dark Phoenix" without the involvement of the "Deadpool 2" crew.
- The filming of the sequel was announced 3 days before the release of the first part of "Deadpool". Ryan Reynolds signed a contract to star in the sequel on April 6, 2016.
