Ondine

Ondine is a drama set on the coast of Cork, Ireland. Syracuse is a divorced fisherman who has given up drinking and is raising his young daughter Annie, who is seriously ill with kidney failure. One day he pulls a woman from his nets. She is alive, says her name is Ondine, and asks to be kept out of sight. He hides her in an isolated cottage that once belonged to his mother. Annie learns of her and becomes convinced that Ondine is a selkie, a seal-like creature from Irish legend that takes human form on land. Syracuse, wary of hope, finds himself drawn to her, while the secrecy around her grows harder to maintain.

Neil Jordan directed and wrote the film, his twelfth feature in a career that includes The Brave One before it and Byzantium after. Colin Farrell plays Syracuse, with Alicja Bachleda-Curuś as Ondine, Alison Barry as Annie, Dervla Kirwan as Maura and Tony Curran as Alex. The production was made in Ireland and the United States on a budget of around twelve million dollars.

Released in March 2010, the film earned roughly two million dollars worldwide, well below its cost. On IMDb it holds 6.8 from around 24,000 votes and on TMDB 6.4 from about 369. A critics' rating of 6.5 from 103 reviews sits close to the audience scores.
