The Cloverfield Paradox
Short description
The Cloverfield Paradox is a 2018 science fiction thriller directed by Julius Onah. Set in the near future, it follows a team of scientists aboard a space station orbiting Earth, where dwindling energy resources have pushed the planet toward war. The crew tests an experimental particle accelerator intended to generate a new power source and end the crisis. Something goes wrong during the experiment, and the astronauts find themselves confronting an alternate reality whose dangers begin to threaten the station itself.
The cast includes Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Ava Hamilton, Daniel Brühl as Schmidt, Chris O'Dowd as Mundy, David Oyelowo as Kiel, John Ortiz as Monk Acosta and Elizabeth Debicki as Mina Jensen. Doug Jung and Oren Uziel wrote the screenplay, with J.J. Abrams and Lindsey Weber producing for Paramount and Bad Robot. The film was the first that Onah directed, ahead of Luce in 2019 and Captain America: Brave New World in 2025.
Produced on a budget of about 45 million dollars, the film received modest audience scores: 5.5 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 121,000 votes and 5.6 out of 10 on TMDB from around 3,700 votes. A film critics' rating of 4.6 out of 10 from 157 reviews places it below those audience figures, indicating a largely negative critical response relative to viewer reaction. It runs 102 minutes.

- The film’s original title was “The God Particle.”
- Midway through the film, several cubic meters of water are shown instantly turning into ice upon entering space. In reality, this is simply impossible. First, the water would have to become steam, and after some time, that steam would begin to crystallize, forming a cloud of ice crystals.
- When the team went to detach the ring from the station, they were affected by the force of gravity while in open space.
