Sunset

In late-1920s Hollywood, the legendary lawman Wyatt Earp arrives to serve as a technical adviser on a Western about his own life, with silent-era star Tom Mix cast as Earp on screen. The two men strike up a friendship, but their project is overtaken by a real investigation: a killing draws them into a case involving corruption and the search for a missing young man connected to Earp's past. Their inquiries put them at odds with a powerful studio boss, and the two lawmen of different kinds end up working the case together.

Blake Edwards directed and wrote the film, the twenty-third of the twenty-seven features he directed, following Blind Date and preceding Skin Deep. James Garner plays Earp and Bruce Willis plays Mix, with Malcolm McDowell as studio head Alfie Alperin; Mariel Hemingway, Kathleen Quinlan and Jennifer Edwards also appear among a credited cast of sixty-seven. Tony Adams produced the Italy–United States co-production, made for about 16 million dollars.

Released in April 1988, the film returned roughly 5 million dollars worldwide against its budget, a significant shortfall. On IMDb it holds 5.7 out of 10 from around 5,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.7 from 116 votes. A critics' rating of 3.9 out of 10 from fourteen reviews places it below even those modest audience scores.
