Short description
Somewhere follows Johnny Marco, a successful Hollywood actor who has settled into a life of hotel suites, parties and casual encounters at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles. His routine is interrupted when his eleven-year-old daughter Cleo arrives for an unexpected stay. Her presence pushes him to look at his life and his responsibilities as a father, though the arrangement between them is temporary and neither is quite sure what it will leave behind.
Sofia Coppola directed and wrote the film, which came after Marie Antoinette in her filmography and was produced in part through American Zoetrope. Stephen Dorff plays Johnny, with Elle Fanning as Cleo, and Chris Pontius, Laura Chiatti, Lala Sloatman and Ellie Kemper among the supporting cast.
The film was released in 2010 and runs 98 minutes. Made for about 8 million dollars, it earned roughly 14 million worldwide, a modest return for a drama of its scale. On IMDb it holds a 6.3 from around 48,000 votes, and on TMDB a 6.1 from a much smaller pool of voters, while critics gave it 6.6 across 196 reviews, placing critical and audience responses fairly close together.
What's left behind the scenes
- Sofia Coppola shot the film using the same lens kit for the camera that her father used in his work on the drama “Rumble Fish” (1983).
- Before filming began, Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning spent a lot of time together, “working on” the familial relationship of their characters. Dorff would even pick Fanning up from school sometimes.
- Some of the dialogue in the film—particularly between the characters of Chris Pontius and Elle Fanning—is improvised.
