Godzilla vs. Megaguirus

In an alternate timeline, Japan has never been rid of Godzilla, who returns again and again to draw energy from the country's power sources. A military and scientific unit set up to destroy him develops an inter-dimensional weapon intended to swallow the creature into a black hole. During a test, the device opens a passage to another dimension instead, and something comes through: giant dragonfly-like insects that feed on energy and multiply in the city. Their queen emerges, and the confrontation between the two giants becomes the focus of the story.

Masaaki Tezuka directed this 2000 Toho production, the first of three Godzilla films he made in a row, followed by Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla and Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. The screenplay is by Wataru Mimura and Hiroshi Kashiwabara, and the cast includes Misato Tanaka as Major Kiriko Tsujimori and Shosuke Tanihara as Hajime Kudo.

Made on a budget of about 8 million dollars and released in December 2000, the film took roughly 11 million dollars worldwide against that cost. On IMDb it holds a 6 out of 10 from around 5,300 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7 out of 10 from a much smaller base of 227 votes. The two scores are close, with the TMDB figure resting on far fewer viewers.
