Beach Red follows a company of U.S. Marines as they land on a Japanese-held island in the Pacific during the Second World War and move inland. Leading them is Captain MacDonald, whose men include young, inexperienced recruits alongside seasoned soldiers such as Gunnery Sergeant Honeywell. As the Americans advance, the Japanese defenders prepare a counterattack, and the fighting becomes a brutal contest in difficult terrain. Soldiers on both sides think back to the lives they left behind, and the violence they witness leaves a lasting mark on them. The story is based on Peter Bowman's novel.
The film was directed by Cornel Wilde, who also produced it, co-wrote the screenplay with Clint Johnston and Don Peterson, and appears as Captain MacDonald, with narration by the same character. Rip Torn plays Honeywell, Burr DeBenning and Patrick Wolfe appear as privates Egan and Cliff, Jean Wallace plays Julie MacDonald, and Jaime Sánchez plays Private Colombo. Beach Red was released in August 1967 and runs 103 minutes. It came between Wilde's Maracaibo and Sharks' Treasure, the second of the three films he directed in the chronology.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.2 from around 2,000 votes, while on TMDB its rating is 6.5 from a much smaller number of votes. The two audience scores sit close together, with the larger IMDb sample offering the steadier picture of how the film has been received.
