Stronger tells the story of Jeff Bauman, a Boston man who goes to the finish line of the 2013 Boston Marathon to cheer on his former girlfriend, Erin Hurley. A bomb goes off nearby, killing and injuring people in the crowd, and Jeff loses both his legs. After regaining consciousness in the hospital, he is able to give investigators a description of one of the attackers, which helps the police identify a suspect. His recovery, however, is only beginning, and the months of rehabilitation that follow test him and those around him. The film follows his physical and emotional struggle as he tries to rebuild his life, while his family and Erin each respond in their own way to the sudden attention that comes with what happened to him.
The film is directed by David Gordon Green, the ninth of the fourteen features he has directed to date, arriving between Manglehorn and Halloween. John Pollono wrote the screenplay, and Jake Gyllenhaal, who plays Jeff, produced alongside Scott Silver and David Hoberman. Tatiana Maslany plays Erin, with Miranda Richardson as Jeff's mother and supporting turns from Richard Lane Jr., Nate Richman and Lenny Clarke. Made for a budget of 30 million USD, it earned 9 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.9 from around 54,000 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 7 from roughly 1,600 votes. A critics' rating of 7.3 from 194 reviews places it slightly above the audience scores.
