A firefighter named Kim Ja-hong dies unexpectedly while rescuing a child from a burning building. Three guardians of the dead take charge of his soul and bring him to the afterlife, where every departed person must face a series of trials over a span of 49 days. Only a soul found innocent can be reborn. Ja-hong's three escorts act as his defenders in the hearings, but the guardians are bound by a rule that forbids them from interfering in human affairs, and at least one of them feels a strong pull toward the people they guide.
The film is directed and written by Kim Yong-hwa, whose earlier work includes 200 Pounds Beauty, released in 2006. This film came next in his filmography, followed by a sequel, Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days, in 2018, and The Moon in 2023. Ha Jung-woo plays the lead guardian Gang-rim, with Cha Tae-hyun as Ja-hong, Ju Ji-hoon and Kim Hyang-gi as his fellow guardians, Lee Jung-jae as King Yeomra, and Kim Dong-wook as Kim Su-hong.
It was made for about 18 million dollars and took in roughly 109 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.2 out of 10 from around 22,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 8.1 out of 10 from roughly 1,264 votes. A critics' rating of 6.8 out of 10 from 10 reviews is lower than either audience score.
