The Commuter
Short description
Michael MacCauley rides the same commuter train into and out of the city every working day, surrounded by familiar faces. On one such journey home, a stranger named Joanna sits down beside him and makes him an offer: identify a particular passenger aboard before the final stop, and he will be paid well. She gives him only a false name and a destination. When he hesitates, she makes clear that his refusal would endanger the people in the carriage and his own family. What began as a routine trip becomes an hour-long struggle to work out who the target is and how to escape the trap he has been drawn into.
The film is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, the eighth of the thirteen features he has directed in chronological order, following The Shallows and preceding Jungle Cruise. Liam Neeson leads as MacCauley, with Vera Farmiga as Joanna and Patrick Wilson, Sam Neill, Jonathan Banks and Elizabeth McGovern among the supporting cast. Ryan Engle, Byron Willinger and Philip de Blasi wrote the screenplay, and Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman produced.
Released in January 2018, the film was made for about 30 million dollars and took roughly 120 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from around 133,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.4 out of 10 from about 4,700 votes. Its critics' rating stands lower, at 5.4 out of 10 from 214 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Liam Neeson's character lives in Tarrytown. All the railway station names mentioned in the film are fictional. Tarrytown is the only real town on the Metro North Railroad line leading to New York's Grand Central Terminal.
- At the beginning of the film, as Neeson’s character passes through Grand Central Terminal, a poster for “Paddington 2” can be spotted.
- North of Tarrytown lies Sleepy Hollow, the setting for Tim Burton’s 1999 gothic horror film “Sleepy Hollow,” starring Johnny Depp.
