Churchill

Set in June 1944, this historical drama follows Winston Churchill as the Allied invasion of Normandy approaches. The British prime minister, worn down by years of war, must decide whether to back Operation Overlord, the plan to land Allied forces in Nazi-occupied Europe. He arrives in Normandy hoping to make the case for the operation, but finds few supporters among the generals and American allies. A failed invasion would leave him to carry the blame. At the same time, the strain of the conflict has damaged his marriage to Clementine, who remains at his side as both the fate of the war and their relationship reach a turning point. The story unfolds across the tense hours just before D-Day.

Brian Cox plays Churchill, with Miranda Richardson as Clementine, John Slattery as Dwight Eisenhower, Julian Wadham as Bernard Montgomery, Richard Durden as Jan Smuts and Ella Purnell as Helen Garrett. Jonathan Teplitzky directed from a screenplay by Alex von Tunzelmann, produced by Claudia Bluemhuber, Nick Taussig and Piers Tempest. The film was made for 10 million USD and runs 110 minutes. It belongs to the later part of Teplitzky's career, following The Railway Man in 2013 and preceding Spit in 2025. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.2 out of 10 from 349 votes.
