Flatliners
Short description
Five medical students decide to find out for themselves whether anything lies beyond death. They take turns stopping each other's hearts for brief periods, then reviving one another, so that each can bring back a report from the other side. The group includes Courtney, Ray, Marlo, Jamie and Sophia. What begins as a controlled experiment becomes harder to contain as the sessions continue, and the consequences of returning from death start to follow them into their everyday lives. The film is a drama with horror and thriller elements, and it was written by Ben Ripley and produced by Michael Douglas, Laurence Mark and Peter Safran.
Niels Arden Oplev directed the film, which arrived in 2017, after Dead Man Down and Speed Walking and before Rose. Alongside Elliot Page as Courtney, the cast includes Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton, Kiersey Clemons and Beau Mirchoff.
Made for about 19 million US dollars, the film took roughly 45 million US dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.2 from around 54,000 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 5.6 from more than 2,400 votes. The film critics' rating stands at 3.6 from 77 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- At the end of the film, a voiceover says, "There are boundaries that are best not crossed." This is the tagline of the 1990 film (a tagline is a concise phrase that reflects the main message of the filmmakers).
- Jamie, played by James Norton, says the phrase "Today is a good day to die." In Joel Schumacher's 1990 film, which Niels Arden Oplev's film is a remake of, David, played by Kevin Bacon, says "hozhokei," which in the language of Native North Americans means the same thing – "Today is a good day to die."
- All the medical students shown in Niels Arden Oplev's film have names different from those of the characters in Joel Schumacher's film, and sometimes even have different genders and nationalities, but their stories are similar to those of the main characters in the 1990 film.
