Christian is the chief curator of a contemporary art museum in Stockholm, where he is preparing a new installation called "The Square." The piece is meant to serve as a moral zone that encourages altruism and questions how much trust people still place in one another. Christian's own life, however, does not match the values the exhibit promotes. He lives comfortably, drives an electric car and presents himself as a devoted father of two, yet when he is robbed in the street, his response sets off a chain of events that undermines both his position at the museum and his view of himself. Around the same time, a publicity campaign for the exhibition provokes a reaction no one anticipated.
Ruben Östlund wrote and directed the film, which followed his 2014 feature Force Majeure and came before Triangle of Sadness in 2022. Claes Bang plays Christian, with Elisabeth Moss, Dominic West, Terry Notary, Christopher Læssø and Lise Stephenson Engström among the cast. The production involved companies from Sweden, Germany, Denmark, France and the United States, and the film took about 9 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds a critics' rating of 7.5/10 from 219 reviews, while on TMDB it has 6.7/10 from 1,791 votes, suggesting critics responded more favorably than general viewers.
