The Dinner
Short description
Two couples meet for dinner at an expensive restaurant, and the meal soon becomes something far more serious than a social occasion. Stan Lohman, a politician running for governor, has arranged the evening with his brother Paul and their wives, Claire and Katelyn. Their teenage sons were involved in a terrible crime, and the four adults have to decide how to respond. Long-standing resentments between the brothers surface as they argue over what protecting their families should mean.
The film is based on Herman Koch's novel The Dinner. Oren Moverman directed and wrote the screenplay, following his earlier features The Messenger, Rampart and Time Out of Mind. Richard Gere plays Stan, with Steve Coogan as Paul, Laura Linney as Claire and Rebecca Hall as Katelyn. Chloë Sevigny and Michael Chernus also appear. The film runs two hours.
Released in May 2017, The Dinner drew little at the box office, with worldwide takings of about 3 million dollars. Audience response was poor: it holds 4.5 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 10,000 votes and the same score on TMDB from a much smaller pool of users. A critics' rating of 5.4 out of 10 from 141 reviews sits above those audience scores, though it still indicates a mixed reception.
What's left behind the scenes
- Richard Gere and Laura Linney have previously worked together on "Primal Fear" (1996) and "The Mothman Prophecies" (2001). Gere had also previously worked with director Oren Moverman on "Rampart".
- Initially, it was planned that Kate Blanchett would direct the film and Oren Moverman would write the screenplay, but Oren Moverman ultimately directed the film.
- The film is based on the bestseller by Herman Koch, "The Dinner." There were already two adaptations: the Dutch film of the same name, Het Diner (Menno Meyjes, 2013), and the Italian film "Our Boys" (Ivano De Matteo, 2014).
- Initially, Kate Blanchett was planned to direct the film, and Oren Moverman was to write the screenplay.
