Thelma

Thelma is a young woman who has moved from a small town on Norway's west coast to Oslo for university, leaving behind a strictly religious upbringing and overprotective parents. Shy and guarded, she keeps to herself until she becomes drawn to a fellow student, Anja. As their relationship develops, Thelma begins suffering severe seizures, and it becomes clear that these episodes are tied to frightening, uncontrollable abilities. Her feelings for Anja and the powers awakening in her become increasingly difficult to separate.

Joachim Trier directed the film and wrote the screenplay with Eskil Vogt, following his earlier features Reprise, Oslo, August 31st and Louder Than Bombs. Eili Harboe plays Thelma, with Kaya Wilkins as Anja, Henrik Rafaelsen and Ellen Dorrit Petersen as her parents, and Marte Magnusdotter Solem in a supporting role. The production was a collaboration between Danish, Norwegian, French and Swedish companies and had a budget of about 6 million dollars, against a worldwide box office of roughly 2 million. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from more than 35,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.8 out of 10 from over 1,100 votes. A critics' rating of 7.3 out of 10 from 152 reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores. Trier went on to direct The Worst Person in the World and Sentimental Value.
