Short description

Dominika Egorova is a prima ballerina whose career ends after an injury, leaving her without prospects. She is pressed into service by Russian intelligence and sent to a secret training school where young recruits are taught to use their bodies and minds as weapons, and she is deliberately made to depend on the uncle who delivered her there. She becomes one of the program's most effective operatives. Her first major assignment brings her into contact with Nathaniel Nash, a CIA officer handling the agency's most sensitive penetration of Russian intelligence. What begins as a mission of seduction and surveillance draws both of them into mutual attraction and deception that puts their careers, their loyalties and the security of their countries at risk.

Francis Lawrence directed, working from a screenplay by Justin Haythe; Steven Zaillian, Jenno Topping and Peter Chernin produced. The film sits between the two Mockingjay instalments and Slumberland in Lawrence's filmography, and reunites him with Jennifer Lawrence, who stars as Dominika. Joel Edgerton plays Nash, with Matthias Schoenaerts, Charlotte Rampling, Jeremy Irons and Ciarán Hinds in supporting roles. It is a large production, with 40 credited cast and 165 credited crew members.

Made for 69 million US dollars, the film took 152 million worldwide, a solid return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.6/10 from 217,000 votes and on TMDB 6.5/10 from 6,476 votes, indicating a broadly middling audience response. The critics' rating of 5.5/10 from 300 reviews is lower than both audience scores, showing reviewers were less persuaded than viewers.
