Short description
Hard Target 2 follows Wes Baylor, a former mixed martial arts fighter whose career collapsed after a fatal accident in the ring. Now broke and drinking too much, he takes part in underground bouts in Thailand until a stranger offers him a million dollars for one last fight in Myanmar. The offer turns out to be a trick: Wes becomes the prey in a manhunt staged for wealthy clients, and he is turned loose in the jungle with almost nothing. He has to outwit a heavily armed hunting party and reach the border, helped by a local woman, Tha, who has her own reasons for being there. The film is a sequel to the 1993 action thriller Hard Target and moves the premise to Southeast Asia.
Roel Reiné directed, working from a screenplay by Matt Harvey, Dominic Morgan and George Huang, with Chris Lowenstein producing. It is the fifteenth of the twenty-one films Reiné has directed in chronological order, coming between Admiral and Dead Again in Tombstone. Scott Adkins plays Wes, with Rhona Mitra as Sofia, Robert Knepper as Jonah Aldrich, Temuera Morrison as Madden, Byron Gibson as Wes Trainer and Ann Truong as Tha.
The film runs 104 minutes and was released in July 2016. It grossed about 105 million dollars worldwide, a strong return for a production from Universal 1440 Entertainment and Living Films. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.2 out of 10 from around 7,200 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 322 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- The character played by Robert Nepper uses the same rifle that Lance Henriksen's character used in John Woo's 1993 film “Hard Target”. It is a Contender model from the American firm Thompson/Center Arms.
- The speedboat chase scene was originally written into the script for 'Hard Target' in 1993, but at some point it was replaced with a horse chase. This scene was included here as a tribute to John Woo.
- The film features pigeons, which is a reference to John Woo, the director of the original 1993 film. Woo repeatedly filmed pigeons in his films.
- This film is considered a sequel to the 1993 action film, but none of the actors from Woo's film appear in the cast of Roel Reiné's thriller.
