Short description

Set in the summer of 1939 in Volhynia, then part of Poland, Hatred follows Zosia, a young Polish woman in love with a Ukrainian boy named Petro. Her father forces her into marriage with a wealthy widower, Maciej Skiba, partly for the sake of land. When war breaks out and the men of the village are called up to fight the Germans, Zosia is left behind to raise her husband's children. As the Polish army suffers defeats, violence spreads among the Polish, Ukrainian and Jewish neighbours, and Zosia witnesses the growing attacks on the Polish population, culminating in the events of 1943.

Wojciech Smarzowski directed and wrote the film, his second feature in the chronological list of his work, between The Dark House (2009) and Clergy (2018). Michalina Łabacz plays Zosia, with Arkadiusz Jakubik as Maciej Skiba, Adrian Zaremba as Antek Wilk, Lech Dyblik as Hawryluk and Jacek Braciak as Głowacki among the 29 credited cast members. Dariusz Pietrykowski and Andrzej Polec produced the Polish production.

Made for a budget of about 10 million dollars, the film took roughly 7 million dollars worldwide. It runs 150 minutes. On IMDb it holds 7.6 out of 10 from around 7,500 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.2 out of 10 from 164 votes, a close agreement between the two audiences.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The filmmakers paid special attention to historical accuracy: a historian was constantly present on set. A number of episodes in the film are direct references to real events of the Volhynian massacre: the execution of the poet and Home Army officer—the fate of Second Lieutenant Zygmunt Rumel, who, acting on behalf of the Polish government in London, arrived unarmed for negotiations with the Banderites and was torn apart by horses; the extermination of believers in a church—events in the villages of Kiselin (July 11, 1943) and Porytsk; the scene of the blessing of scythes and axes and the preaching of violence by clergy—events in the village of Shtun in the Lyuboml district, as well as in the churches of the villages of Slaventin, Yankovitsy, Solonev, Khlebovitsy Svirski, Slupki, Chernishuvka, Germakuvka, Nenkovye, and Gaye Velke.
