Dear Zindagi
Short description
Dear Zindagi is an Indian drama about Kaira, a young cinematographer whose professional promise is undermined by her difficulty connecting with others. The relationships in her life, including those with her parents and the men she becomes involved with, leave her frustrated and uncertain about what she wants. She meets Dr. Jehangir Khan, a therapist with an unconventional approach, and their conversations, along with time spent cycling and by the sea, gradually give her a different outlook. The film follows her as she reckons with her past and reconsiders how she measures a worthwhile life.
Gauri Shinde directed and wrote the film, which followed her earlier English Vinglish. Alia Bhatt plays Kaira, with Shah Rukh Khan as Dr. Jehangir Khan, and Kunal Kapoor, Ali Zafar, Aditya Roy Kapur and Angad Bedi in supporting roles. The production, backed by Dharma Productions, Red Chillies Entertainment and Hope Productions, was made for about 4 million dollars and returned roughly 3 million dollars worldwide.
Audience responses have been warm: on IMDb it holds 7.4/10 from around 47,000 votes, and on TMDB 7/10 from 267 votes. A critics' rating of 6.7/10 from 15 reviews places it somewhat below those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The scene in which, during a bicycle ride, the characters played by Khan and Bhatt have the latter fall, was inspired by an incident on the set of the melodrama 'Everything Happens in Life' (Karan Johar, 1998), when Kajol actually fell off a bicycle.
- The road in Goa along which the characters of Bhatt and Khan ride bicycles has been renamed due to the film's popularity.
- Ali Zafar (born in Lahore, Pakistan) was not present in the film's promotional materials and did not participate in the advertising campaign due to a ban on filming Pakistanis in Indian films.
- The film was shot mainly in the state of Goa, and only the last two days of filming took place in Singapore. Unfortunately, it rained on the very first day of shooting in Singapore, and more than half of the shooting day was lost. On the last day of filming, the film crew had to get up early and work 'flat out' to shoot all the necessary scenes and catch the morning flight the next day.
