In a small town in Western Australia during the summer of 1969, fourteen-year-old Charlie Bucktin is woken one night by Jasper Jones, a half-Aboriginal teenager the town treats as an outcast. Jasper leads him into the bush and shows him the body of his girlfriend, Laura, and asks for Charlie's help. Fearing that Jasper will be blamed, Charlie agrees to stay silent and begins looking into what happened, while the town's suspicions, its racism and the tensions inside his own family close in around him. His friendship with Laura's younger sister, Eliza, deepens into his first experience of love.
The film is an adaptation of Craig Silvey's novel, with Silvey and Shaun Grant writing the screenplay. Rachel Perkins directed it; among her features it followed Bran Nue Dae and Mabo and came before the television work that followed. Levi Miller plays Charlie, Aaron L. McGrath plays Jasper, and Angourie Rice plays Eliza, with Toni Collette and Dan Wyllie as Charlie's parents and Hugo Weaving as Mad Jack Lionel. Twenty-one actors are credited.
Released in 2017, the film runs 105 minutes. On IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from around 3,900 votes, and on TMDB 6.4 out of 10 from roughly 95 votes. A critics' rating of 6.4 out of 10 from 23 reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting a modest overall reception rather than a sharply divided one.
