Forensic psychiatrist Cara Harding has built her career on debunking the idea of multiple personality disorder, dismissing it as a claim without scientific basis. Her father, a respected psychologist, brings her the case of a patient whose condition defies any rational diagnosis, and she begins to investigate for herself. What she finds is that the different personalities inhabiting the man appear to belong to people who were murdered. The film follows her attempts to make sense of the case, a search that places her under growing threat.

Julianne Moore plays Cara, with Jonathan Rhys Meyers as the patient and Jeffrey DeMunn as her father. Frances Conroy, Nate Corddry and Brooklynn Proulx appear in supporting roles. The film was directed by Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein, the first feature in their directing filmography ahead of Underworld: Awakening, from a screenplay by Michael Cooney, and it was produced by Neal Edelstein, Darlene Caamano Loquet and Emilio Diez Barroso.

The production had a budget of 22 million dollars. Audience response has been moderate: on IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from roughly 39,000 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 6 out of 10, from a much smaller pool of 786 votes. A film critics' rating of 3.9 out of 10, drawn from 27 reviews, is notably lower than both audience scores, indicating that professional reviewers were considerably less receptive to the film than general viewers were.
