CHiPs follows two very different men who end up patrolling the freeways of Los Angeles as motorcycle officers with the California Highway Patrol. Jon Baker is a former professional rider trying to rebuild his life and his marriage after years of injuries, while Frank "Ponch" Poncherello is an undercover federal agent investigating a multimillion-dollar robbery that may have involved officers from within the department. Paired together, the inexperienced recruit and the hardened investigator clash almost immediately, and turning their mutual irritation into a working partnership proves harder than either expected. Their combination of riding skill and street knowledge might make them effective, if they can stop getting in each other's way.
The film is a comedic take on the television series that was popular in the United States in the 1970s. It was directed by Dax Shepard, who also wrote the screenplay, produced it and plays Jon Baker, following his earlier directorial effort Hit & Run. Michael Peña stars as Ponch, with Jessica McNamee, Rosa Salazar, Adam Brody and Ryan Hansen in supporting roles.
Released in March 2017, the film had a budget of 25 million USD and took in about 27 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6 out of 10 from around 54,000 votes, and on TMDB it scores 6.1 out of 10 from roughly 1,400 votes. A critics' rating of 3.8 out of 10 from 111 reviews places it well below the audience scores.
