Greg Heffley, a middle schooler with his own agenda, talks his family into a cross-country road trip to celebrate his great-grandmother's ninetieth birthday. His real motive is a video game convention that happens to lie along the way, and he and his older brother Rodrick quietly add a detour to the route. The plan drags the whole Heffley family into a trip that goes badly wrong. The film is a family road comedy based on Jeff Kinney's best-selling children's books.
David Bowers directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Kinney. It is the fifth film Bowers directed, after Flushed Away, Astro Boy, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, and his third entry in this series. Jason Ian Drucker plays Greg, with Alicia Silverstone and Tom Everett Scott as his parents, Charlie Wright as Rodrick, Owen Asztalos as Rowley and Wyatt Walters as Manny.
Released in May 2017, the film cost about 22 million dollars and took in roughly 40 million worldwide. Audience scores are low: on IMDb it holds 4.3/10 from about 13,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.3/10 from around 550 votes. A critics' rating of 4.2/10 from 69 reviews sits close to the audience figures, so viewers and critics alike received it coolly.
