Short description
Christopher Robin has grown up. The boy who once spent his days exploring the Hundred Acre Wood with a band of stuffed animals is now a man weighed down by a demanding, poorly paid job that keeps him from his wife and daughter. When a work obligation forces him to cancel a family trip, his old friend Winnie the Pooh appears in his life again, and the two make their way back toward the woods, where the other toys are waiting. Reuniting with them pushes Christopher to recover the imagination and playfulness he left behind in childhood.
Marc Forster directed the film, the tenth of the thirteen features he has made, following All I See Is You and preceding A Man Called Otto. Tom McCarthy, Allison Schroeder and Alex Ross Perry wrote the screenplay, with Brigham Taylor and Kristin Burr producing. Ewan McGregor plays the adult Christopher Robin, Hayley Atwell his wife Evelyn, and Bronte Carmichael their daughter Madeline, while Jim Cummings voices both Winnie the Pooh and Tigger, Brad Garrett voices Eeyore and Nick Mohammed voices Piglet.
Released in August 2018, the film runs 104 minutes and blends adventure, comedy, family and fantasy. Made for about 75 million dollars, it took in roughly 198 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.2 out of 10 across 90,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.3 from a much smaller pool of voters. A critics' rating of 6.2 from 274 reviews places it somewhat below those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The images of Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends in the film combine features of these characters from the Disney cartoons and the stories written by A.A. Milne (1882-1956), as well as the drawings by Ernest Shepard (1879-1976).
- At the end of the film, Christopher Robin saves the company by offering employees paid vacations so they could buy as much luggage as possible. Henry Ford (1863-1947) was the first American businessman to give his employees both Saturday and Sunday off, and he did so to encourage them to spend as much time as possible behind the wheel.
- The first film in which Owl is voiced by an English actor, rather than an American or a Scotsman speaking with a British accent.
- It was assumed that Jóhann Jóhannsson would compose the music for the film, however, he died in 2018 at the age of 48. The end credits contain a dedication to Jóhannsson.
