Kit, a rebellious teenager still struggling with her father's death, is sent to Blackwood Hall, an isolated boarding school run by the enigmatic Madame Duret. She is one of only five students admitted, all of them girls with troubled pasts. Under Madame Duret's guidance, the students begin to display remarkable talents in music, science and art that they never knew they had. Kit, however, grows uneasy as strange dreams, visions and gaps in memory blur the line between waking life and nightmare, and she comes to suspect that the school has a hidden purpose for its pupils.
Down a Dark Hall is a 2018 horror mystery directed by Rodrigo Cortés, adapted for the screen by Chris Sparling and Michael Goldbach. It is his fourth feature, following Buried and Red Lights. The cast is led by AnnaSophia Robb as Kit, with Uma Thurman as Madame Duret and Isabelle Fuhrman, Victoria Moroles, Taylor Russell and Noah Silver among the students and staff. Stephenie Meyer is one of the producers.
Released in August 2018, the film runs 96 minutes and combines drama, fantasy and thriller elements. Its commercial returns were limited, at around 3 million dollars worldwide. Audiences rate it modestly: 5.1 out of 10 on IMDb from about 16,000 votes, and 5.5 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 733 votes, broadly in line with the critics' rating of 5.2 out of 10 from 26 reviews.
