Short description
Kathy, Ruth and Tommy grow up together at Hailsham, a secluded English boarding school where the students are kept apart from the outside world and told little about what lies ahead. As the three move into adulthood, the friendship between them is complicated by love and jealousy, while a truth they were raised not to question shapes the lives they are expected to lead.
Mark Romanek directed the film, his second feature after One Hour Photo and one of four directing credits listed for him. Alex Garland wrote the screenplay, and Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich produced. Carey Mulligan plays Kathy H., Keira Knightley plays Ruth C. and Andrew Garfield plays Tommy D., with Izzy Meikle-Small, Ella Purnell and Charlie Rowe as the same characters in childhood, among 30 credited cast members and 60 credited crew.
Released in March 2010, the British and American production had a budget of 15 million USD and returned 9 million USD worldwide. Audiences rate it 7.1/10 on IMDb from 160,000 votes and 6.8/10 on TMDB from 2,540 votes, while the film critics' rating stands at 6.8/10 from 186 reviews, roughly level with the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- In the final part of the film, the action takes place in 1994. In the episode where Kathy and Tommy visit Madame and cross the road, a Volkswagen Passat 5th generation (B5+) drives by in the background, which was not released until 2001.
