Mary Beth Dunhill is a marine biologist raising two daughters on a Bahamian island, where she is preparing a captive-born dolphin named Roxanne for life in the open sea. Her neighbour is Terry Barnett, a widowed musician who has moved there with his son and a mischievous dog called Zeus. Mary Beth has little patience for the dog, but when Zeus ends up in the water, Roxanne rescues him from a shark, and an unusual bond forms between the two animals. That friendship draws the two households together and turns the neighbours' wary relationship into something warmer.
George T. Miller directed the film, which came near the end of a run that had included The Man from Snowy River, The Aviator, The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter, Gross Misconduct, Andre and Robinson Crusoe. Tom Benedek wrote the screenplay, and the cast is led by Steve Guttenberg as Terry and Kathleen Quinlan as Mary Beth, with Arnold Vosloo, Dawn McMillan, Jessica Howell and Duchess Tomasello. Gene Rosow, Frank Price and Ludi Boeken produced the Bahamas-United States co-production.
The film took about seven million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.4 out of 10 from roughly 3,400 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.2 from about 91 votes, and a small sample of critics' reviews averages 4.2 out of 10. The audience scores and the critics' figure are close, suggesting broad agreement about the film's modest merits.
