Boychoir follows Stet, a troubled eleven-year-old from a small Texas town whose life is upended by the death of his single mother. His difficulties with school and with the law bring him into contact with figures who sense an unusual musical gift in him, and he is sent to a prestigious boys' choir school. There he clashes with the demanding choirmaster, Master Carvelle, who recognizes a rare talent beneath the boy's defiance and pushes him to develop it. The central conflict lies in whether Stet can adapt to the school's discipline and find a place among its polished students.
François Girard directed the film, his third feature after The Red Violin (1998) and Silk (2007), and later followed it with The Song of Names (2019). Ben Ripley wrote the screenplay, with Carol Baum, Judy Cairo and Jane Goldenring producing. The cast includes Garrett Wareing as Stet, Dustin Hoffman as Carvelle, Debra Winger as Ms. Steel, Kathy Bates as the headmistress, Josh Lucas and Kevin McHale; 32 actors and 53 crew members are credited. Released in 2015 and running 103 minutes, the drama earned about 3 million dollars worldwide, a modest return.
Audience response has been warmer than critical response. On IMDb it holds 6.7 from around 8,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.8 from 297 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 5.2 from 46 reviews.
