The Big Doll House

Set in a women's prison in the Philippines, The Big Doll House follows a group of inmates who endure brutal treatment at the hands of their overseers. Forced into hard labour and subjected to humiliating discipline and arbitrary punishment, the women also turn on one another, with the weakest among them exploited by fellow prisoners. A new arrival, Collier, refuses to accept her situation and begins organising an escape, recruiting several other inmates and enlisting two men from outside the walls to help.

Jack Hill directed the film from a screenplay by Don Spencer, with Cirio H. Santiago and Jane Schaffer producing for New World Pictures and Four Associates Productions. It came early in Hill's career, arriving in 1971 between Alien Terror and The Big Bird Cage, and it stars Judith Brown as Collier, Pam Grier as Grear, Brooke Mills as Harrad, Roberta Collins as Alcott and Pat Woodell as Bodine, with Sid Haig as Harry. The film runs 95 minutes and was made in the United States and the Philippines.

Released on 30 April 1971, The Big Doll House took around 10 million dollars worldwide, a strong return for a low-budget production. Audience response has been moderate: on IMDb it holds 5.8 out of 10 from roughly 3,500 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.6 out of 10 from a much smaller sample of 82 votes.
