Gulliver's Travels
Short description
After a shipwreck, Gulliver arrives on the shores of Lilliput, where he is captured by the tiny inhabitants of the island. He eventually attempts to stop a conflict between this small kingdom and its rival, Blefiscu, while also trying to support a romance between the royal children of the two opposing lands. Along the way, he is both assisted and hindered by a town crier named Gabby. The situation becomes dangerous when a group of clumsy spies from Blefiscu steals Gulliver's pistol.
Produced by Max Fleischer and released in 1939, this animated feature was co-directed by Willard Bowsky and Dave Fleischer. It is the second entry in the chronological list of films directed by Fleischer, following Betty Boop's Hallowe'en Party. The voice cast includes Sam Parker as Gulliver, Pinto Colvig as Gabby, and Cal Howard as Prince David, with Lanny Ross providing the singing voice for the prince.
The film holds a rating of 6.6/10 on IMDb based on 5,400 votes and 6.2/10 on TMDB from 148 votes. A critics' rating of 6.3/10 from 13 reviews is similar to the scores provided by the general audience.
What's left behind the scenes
- This is the first feature-length animated film created by the independent studio "Fleischer Studios"; before this, only "Walt Disney Pictures" had created full-length cartoons.
- A new and, at the time, the most progressive "rotoscoped" technology was used in production – a method where a live actor, in this case Gulliver himself, was filmed first, and then the resulting image was traced by an animator, creating a very realistically moving picture. This animation method was actively used for many years in the USSR as well.
- Screenwriter Cal Howard served as the prototype for Prince David.
- The film was so successful that it was shown in theaters until the 1960s.
- Sam Parker was chosen from over 500 applicants for the role of Gulliver.
- Over 700 artists hand-painted the cartoon for 18 months. 12 tons of paint and 39,000 pencils were used. If the storyboard were laid out sheet by sheet, it would create a strip 27 miles long.
