Short description

Kin centers on Eli, a Detroit teenager who explores an abandoned building and finds a weapon of unknown origin. When his adoptive brother Jimmy, newly out of prison, gets into trouble with a local criminal and his men, Eli uses the weapon to help him. The two then go on the run, pursued by the gang, by federal authorities, and by other parties who want the weapon back.

The film is directed by Jonathan and Josh Baker, who also wrote it with Daniel Casey, working from their own short film. It was the brothers' second feature, following Inconceivable in 2017. Myles Truitt plays Eli, with Jack Reynor as Jimmy, Dennis Quaid as their father Hal, Zoë Kravitz as Milly, James Franco as Taylor Balik and Carrie Coon as Morgan Hunter.

Released in August 2018, the film was a commercial disappointment: against a budget of about 30 million dollars, it took in roughly 10 million worldwide. Audiences have been mixed on it, with a rating of 5.8 out of 10 on IMDb from over 18,000 votes and 6.1 out of 10 on TMDB from around 900 votes. Its critics' score of 5 out of 10 from 98 reviews sits close to those audience figures, indicating a similar level of reception on both sides.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The original title of the film translates to "Kin" or "Relatives".
  • Jack Reynor was cast as Jimmy because he reminded the filmmakers of Bill Paxton. The creators had strongly hoped to work with Paxton one day, but their plans were cut short by his untimely death in 2017.
  • The screenplay was based on a dream had by one of the film's directors (Jonathan Baker or Josh Baker). It featured a boy sitting in a hotel bathtub examining some kind of futuristic weapon. This scene was subsequently included in the movie.
