Iron Mask continues the story of Jonathan Green, the English cartographer played by Jason Flemyng. Commissioned by Peter the Great to chart the eastern reaches of the Russian Empire, Green travels through Russia and on into China, where he encounters strange creatures, a Chinese princess, skilled martial artists and the Dragon King himself. The journey also draws him into a confrontation with black magic and with the masked tsar, a figure who escapes London with the martial arts master known as Master. The film is a sequel to Forbidden Empire, which introduced the same character.
Oleg Stepchenko directs and co-wrote the screenplay with Alexey A. Petrukhin. It is the third feature he has directed, following Jacked$ in 2004 and Forbidden Empire in 2014. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sergei Selyanov and Jackie Chan served as producers, with Schwarzenegger also appearing as James Hook, Chan as Master, and Anna Yao, Anna Churina and Ma Li among the cast of forty-five credited performers. The production, a Russian, Chinese, Cypriot and Czech co-production, cost about 49 million dollars and returned roughly 9 million worldwide.
Audience response has been modest: on IMDb the film holds 4.8 out of 10 from around 10,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.1 from 571 ratings. A critics' rating of 3.6 from 33 reviews places it lower than either audience measure.
