A Ghost Story
Short description
A man dies and returns to the suburban house he shared with his wife as a silent presence beneath a white sheet. Unable to communicate with her, he can only watch as she grieves and gradually rebuilds her life without him. His condition also loosens his hold on time, and his time in the house becomes something stranger and much longer than an ordinary haunting, carrying him far beyond the rooms he knew.
David Lowery wrote and directed the film, which followed his features Ain't Them Bodies Saints and Pete's Dragon and preceded The Old Man & the Gun and The Green Knight. Casey Affleck plays the central figure and Rooney Mara plays his wife, with supporting turns from McColm Kona Cephas Jr., Kenneisha Thompson, Grover Coulson and Liz Cardenas across a cast of 73 credited performers. Adam Donaghey, James M. Johnston and Toby Halbrooks produced.
Released in 2017, the film runs 93 minutes and earned roughly 2 million dollars worldwide, a modest return for an independent drama. Its critical reception was strong: critics gave it an average of 8 out of 10 across 286 reviews, placing it well above the 6.8 rating from 86,000 votes on IMDb and the 7.1 from 2,571 votes on TMDB. The gap suggests critics responded to the film's formal ambitions more readily than general audiences did.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film was shot in Dallas from July to September 2016.
- In some scenes, the ghost was played by the artist who painted the picture, David Pink, who had a build similar to Casey Affleck's.
- The pie scene was filmed in one take. According to Rooney Mara, the pie was vegetarian with a chocolate aroma, but tasted simply awful.
- Playing a ghost, Casey Affleck wore several petticoats and hid a hoop under a sheet.
- The existence of the project was announced after filming had already been completed.
- The house where part of the action takes place was chosen by director and screenwriter David Lowery because the building reminded him of the first house he lived in after getting married. The house was slated for demolition, so the filmmakers didn't have to pay to use it.
- David Lowery said in an interview that the plot was inspired by his relationship with his wife. He didn't want to move from Texas to Los Angeles. A significant portion of the dialogue was taken from his arguments with his wife at the time.
